8 Signs Your Nissan Needs a Transmission RepairNissan vehicles will keep you and your family safe and in motion for many years to come. However, you will need to keep your eyes and ears open for signs that tell you to take your vehicle to your Nissan dealer for maintenance. Here are the signs you may need a transmission repair.

1. You Have Trouble Switching Gears

If you notice your transmission seems to grind or if it struggles to change gears, get this checked as soon as possible. This can mean your transmission fluid is old or low.

2. You Hear Strange Noises

If you hear strange noises when your vehicle is sitting in neutral, you need to get this looked at immediately. These noises can mean that you have dirty transmission fluid, which is easily fixed with a transmission flush. However, noises could also indicate your transmission has further damage that would require more work.

3. You Smell Burning

If you smell a burning odor, see your mechanic right away. This burning smell can mean that your transmission fluid is old and no longer being used properly. It could also mean your transmission is overheating from use, which could lead to further repairs.

4. You Notice Leaking Fluid

Look at the area underneath where you commonly park occasionally. If you notice red or sweet-smelling fluid, consult your mechanic as soon as possible. You likely have a leak that needs to be fixed.

5. You Notice Your Gears Slipping

If you notice your engine revving up for a gear change when it’s not time to switch gears, or you can feel the gears slipping, you need to get this checked out immediately. It can be very dangerous to drive with slipping gears! Plus, the longer you leave the repair, the more extensive and costly it will be.

6. Your Check Engine Light Comes On

If your check engine light comes on, it means something is malfunctioning in your vehicle, which needs attention as soon as possible. Usually, there will only be a minor issue with your vehicle, such as low fluid. But occasionally it can mean your transmission is failing or something else serious.

7. Your Gears Won’t Change at All

If you’re attempting to change gears but your vehicle remains unresponsive, this is a sign there’s something wrong with your transmission. This mostly occurs when you try to change from park to drive. Don’t force your vehicle into another gear and get it checked soon.

8. Your Nissan Dealer Says You Need It

They will probably check your transmission and fluid levels during your general maintenance appointments at your dealership. Your mechanic will flush and replace fluid as needed and let you know if you need repairs done on your transmission.
