Nissan Altima Engine: One 2.5L Four-Cylinder, Two Drivetrains

The 2026 Nissan Altima engine is a 2.5-liter, direct-injected four-cylinder, and it is the only engine the Altima offers. Both trims, the SV and the SR, pair it with an Xtronic CVT.

So the real choice is the drivetrain. Front-wheel drive gets more power and better mileage, while Intelligent All-Wheel Drive gives up a little of each for traction in bad weather. Start your search in our new Nissan inventory.

Front-Wheel Drive or All-Wheel Drive

White Nissan Altima driving on a road

Front-wheel drive and All-Wheel Drive use the same 2.5L engine but differ in power, mileage and fuel tank size. Here is how their EPA mileage estimates and fuel tank sizes compare on the 2026 Altima.

2026 Altima 2.5L Front-Wheel Drive Intelligent All-Wheel Drive
EPA city 26 mpg 25 mpg
EPA highway 36 mpg 33 mpg
EPA combined 30 mpg 28 mpg
Fuel tank 16.2 gallons 16.0 gallons

Actual mileage may vary with driving conditions - use for comparison only.

Choosing all-wheel drive gives up 6 horsepower and 3 mpg on the highway. In return, Intelligent All-Wheel Drive constantly monitors road conditions and sends power to the wheels that need it most, for more confidence and control in changing weather.

Driver-assist and safety features have limitations which affect how they function in certain situations. The driver must never rely exclusively on any vehicle feature to warn about, prevent, or lessen the severity of a collision. It is the driver’s responsibility to always be in control, monitor the surroundings, and safely operate the vehicle. Read your vehicle’s Owner’s Manual for further information.

Here in Central Indiana, Indianapolis averages a little over 25 inches of snow a year, usually between late November and mid-March. The total swings widely from year to year: calendar year 2023 brought under 6 inches, the third-least snowy year on record, while calendar year 2025 brought more than 30 inches.

If you have to drive on snow days, for an early shift or a job that doesn't close for weather, we'd lean toward all-wheel drive. If you can wait out the worst mornings and want the best mileage the rest of the year, front-wheel drive is the efficient choice.

How the 2.5L Drives

The Altima's 2.5L is an efficient four-cylinder. Its fuel injection and valve timing, the Xtronic CVT and the suspension all shape how it drives.

The 2.5L's Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG) system delivers fuel straight into each of its four cylinders. Variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust valves adjusts as you drive.

Instead of fixed gears, the Altima's Xtronic CVT moves through one continuous range of ratios on its own. On the SR, paddle shifters with a manual shift mode let you do the shifting yourself when you want to. The SV does not offer paddle shifters.

Every 2026 Altima uses a multi-link rear suspension set up for responsive yet comfortable handling. The SR with front-wheel drive gets a sport-tuned version, and the SR with all-wheel drive does not. Sport seats and 19-inch wheels come on every SR.

Altima Models That Use This Engine

The 2.5L powers every 2026 Nissan Altima: the SV and the SR, each with front-wheel drive or Intelligent All-Wheel Drive. SR models with the SR Midnight Edition package or the SR Premium Package use the same engine. This table lists each version with its curb weight, so you can see how much weight all-wheel drive adds.

2026 Altima Drivetrain Curb Weight
SV Front-wheel drive 3,281 lb
SV Intelligent All-Wheel Drive 3,399 lb
SR Front-wheel drive 3,322 lb
SR Intelligent All-Wheel Drive 3,440 lb
