If you have an AC not working, your Nissan dealer can fix it for you. These are a few signs your AC is on the fritz. more No Air From the Ducts If you can hear your AC running, but no air is blowing into the cabin, your ducts could be blocked. Air is drawn into your AC via a vent just underneath your windshield. This air passes into the AC, where the moisture is removed, the air is chilled and then blown into the cabin. Dirt, leaf particles, and other debris can also enter the vent and cause blockages over time. This will reduce or prevent air movement. Another possible cause of the problem is a damaged AC fan. The fan switches on to blow the cold air into the cabin. If the fan fails due to damage or electrical problems like a blown fuse, it won't circulate any air. We'll examine your AC system to identify the cause of the problem and then we'll repair it. Noises From the AC Your AC makes barely any noise when it's working. If you listen closely, you'll hear the tiny click-click of the AC compressor switching on and off as the air is chilled. Liquid coolant is pumped through your engine, and it absorbs radiating heat as it moves. This heat is transported inside the coolant to the radiator, where the heat is removed by heat exchange. Coolant is released when your engine temperature reaches 180 F and is withdrawn when the temperature falls below 180 F. The thermostat controls the release of coolant. Although the thermostat is a relatively simple component, it can still become damaged over time. A damaged thermostat can jam open or closed. If the thermostat jams open, it will release too much coolant, and our engine will run inefficiently and use more gas. A thermostat that jams closed won't release any coolant, and your engine will overheat. We can easily fix this problem by replacing the damaged thermostat. Clogged Catalytic Converter The combustion process produces large quantities of toxic gases like hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide. The catalytic converter uses chemical reactions, heat, and pressure to convert these gases into harmless ones. Once the conversion is complete, the safe chemicals exit the exhaust system via the tailpipe. Carbon gradually accumulates in the converter and blocks it. If this happens, unconverted engine chemicals are forced back into the engine. This increases the pressure inside the engine and can cause it to shut down. If the engine doesn't shut down, the chemicals will turn your engine fuel rich. A fuel-rich engine can damage the spark plugs, ignition coils, and other components. We can remove the converter and clean it to clear any blockages. Blown Head Gasket Your engine has numerous seals and gaskets, but the most important is the head gasket. This gasket forms a perfect seal between the upper and lower sections of your engine. The two engine sections contain different fluids and must be kept at sustained pressures. We routinely examine the condition of this gasket during regular services. A blown head gasket is usually caused by excessive engine temperatures, but it can also occur due to age or other damage. In these circumstances, oil and coolant can mix. The coolant will turn milky and becomes less effective at reducing engine temperature. The cylinders and pistons can also be damaged. Brake pads are an essential part of your braking system, as they generate the friction that brings your wheels to a stop. The pads wear down over time, which increases the time needed for your brakes to engage. As your Nissan dealer, we want to tell you about some of the signs we need to install new pads for you. more Screeching Noises When you hit the brakes, your Nissan should respond almost instantly and your car will come to a stop. The pads are covered by a friction material covering that generates friction against the rotors. Each time you apply the brakes, minute particles of friction material flake off. A new pad has a 1/2" thick covering, and a pad needs to be replaced when it reaches 1/4" thickness. Pad manufacturers install a warning device in each pad to remind you that they need to be replaced. When a pad's material covering drops to 1/4", a metal spike is revealed. This spike will scratch against the smooth surface of the rotor each time you brake, and it produces a loud screeching noise. If you hear this sound when you brake, it's time to visit us for new pads. Glazed Pads A glazed pad is a pad that's been kept in contact with a rotor for an extended period. When you hit the brakes, the brake calipers close on either side of each rotor, and the pads do their work of stopping your car. When you take your foot off the brake, the calipers are withdrawn. A pad can remain in contact with a rotor if it's damaged and doesn't withdraw completely. The pad in a damaged caliper may continue to skim across the surface of its rotor. If this occurs for long enough, the affected pad will develop a smooth and shiny surface. This is known as glazing, and it's dangerous, as a glazed pad can't generate friction anymore. If you have a glazed pad, you could find that your car pulls to one side when you brake. We can easily replace a glazed pad to fix this problem. Increased Stopping Distance If your car seems to be taking longer to stop than it previously did, you could have worn pads. Worn pads produce less friction due to damage and a thinner material covering. The thinner covering also means that the calipers take slightly longer than usual to clamp onto the rotors. This time is measured in seconds, but it can be the difference between a near miss and a collision. Your car battery provides the electrical charge that's essential for cranking and starting your engine. A battery has a relatively limited life of five years or less, and then you'll need a new car battery. As your Nissan dealer, we'd like you to know signs that your battery could be failing and you need to visit us for a replacement. more Corroded Battery Corrosion in a battery is created by the chemicals inside the battery slowly failing. The battery contains several different chemicals, the most important of which is sulfuric acid. These chemicals enable the battery to store electricity as chemical energy. As the chemicals react, they gradually break down, and your battery starts to weaken. Sulfuric acid releases hydrogen gas as it breaks down. Hydrogen gas molecules are small enough to escape the battery and enter the engine compartment. The hydrogen molecules combine with sulfur molecules from the fuel and form hydrogen sulfide. The hydrogen sulfide is drawn back to the battery and will start to corrode the terminals and battery cables. We can't repair a corroding battery, but we can replace it to fix the problem. Slow Starting The battery's most important function is to provide the electricity that starts the engine. When you hit the start button, the battery sends an electrical charge to the starter motor. This charge powers the motor and initiates the crank, and your engine will come to life. Powering the starter motor uses a large percentage of the battery's reserves, which can become a problem for an older battery. As the battery ages, its maximum charging and electrical storage capacity decline. If your engine takes longer to start than usual, you could have a failing battery. The reduced electricity storage means your battery may not have enough power to start the engine immediately. This type of starting difficulty will gradually grow worse until the batter fails. We can replace the battery to fix this problem. Worn Alternator A worn alternator can cause your battery to fail. The alternator is responsible for producing electricity for your car's systems.
